An Indian instrument, Tabra
The live I saw yesterday was very nice. I found their sounds taste little bit like bossa nova, but very unique. The important essence is supposed to be the Indien instruments "Tabla". I get interested in it really.
Quotation from the mail of bimhuis:
BOI AKIH
Monica Akihary-vocals,
Ernst Reijseger-cello,
Niels Brouwer-guitar,
Sandip Bhattacharya-tabla, percussion
The musical roots of vocalist Monica Akihary lie in the music of the Molucca Islands and are the essence of Boi Akih. The contributions of master improvisor Ernst Reijseger on cello, Indian percussionist Sandip Batthacharya on tabla and Niels Brouwer on guitar (Akihary's musical partner since many years) create a highly original kind of music that they call 'world beat'. Those various influences give Boi Akih a unique sound with a personal atmosphere, fragile, mysterious, serene, yet powerful.
Due to the late arrival, we missed the first 30 minutes of their live shown above.

When we get there, they played a slow tempo music and the vocal was singing in an unknown language. After the music, the cellist started licking the fingers and strached the cello to make noise. The vocal started making strange voice, and the others also did something strange.

First I get disgusted by looking at them because their action is too strange to listen to the music. After I can listen to the music keenly, an clear image of night jungle become projected in my mind. I've ever listen such a sound in CD, but I've been thinking that can only be produced by electlic equipments. There they create such a sound using the instruments and their body, so it was very shocking for me to know it.

They mostly make such a jungle sound in the intro and the end of songs. In the middle of songs, they make the unique taste not only by technique, but also the unique instruments "Tabla" from India.

The structure should be just a drum though, it creates various and mysterious tones. The percussioner was siting on a table, and had four or five drums around him. The drums are all different size though, they're just less than 30 cm height in maximum, which can't seems to create variable sounds.

I could only see him playing "Tabla" from the distance, so I could not see exactly how he plays. All I could see is using the palms. He was slideing the palm front and rear to change tone. It's very surprizing for me because I thought the sound should be shut off by covering the drum by palms.

The Indien instruments is quite mysterous. Someday I would play it.
